Beauty

BEAUTY

My grandfather,
well into his 90s,
told me how he awoke
in the morning to a brief moment of
bliss
thinking of all he would accomplish that day
until
his feet hit the floor and he
remembered
“I’m 93…”

How frustrating to have
such
clarity of mind
such
expectations for the day
such
simple ambitions
but not a body
that allows
any to come to fruition.

How heartbreaking to think
for just a moment,
“Today I’ll mow the lawn,
trim the hedges,
wash the car,
cut flowers for my love…”

only to realize
that bending
has become near impossible,
lifting
a triumph left for the glass of milk;
a slow shuffle
— the greatest achievement of the day.

“As we grow old…the beauty steals inward.” Emerson

We must continue to
reveal the
beauty
in us all.
